Specialized Bicycles

I grew up with access to a lot of tools, but not a lot of money. My dad and mom were both believers in doing it yourself, and even though they did not have a lot of money, they always managed to make do pretty well. They taught us how to make everything by ourselves. We made our own toys, our own clothes, and even our own bikes. As such, I was never a big believer in specialized bicycles when I was growing up. All you needed was a general purpose bike to get out and ride around town. It could have thick tires, thin tires, a plush seat, or no seat at all. It didn't really matter all that much. You didn't need a specialized bike to get around, just something with two wheels and a gear set.

Getting more serious about biking, however, has really changed my opinions on the subject. The homemade bike I had when I was a kid was enough for getting around town, but if you're going 20 or 30 miles a day, a specialized bicycle can really make a difference.

Specialized bicycles often mean the difference between a damaging, uncomfortable ride and an easy, carefree afternoon. You see, a bicycle is a tool, and like any tool it should be well designed for your activities. If you take your mountain bike on the street, you get tired quickly. If you take your road bike off-road, you'll wipe out, pop a tire, or even wreck your frame. A good hybrid bicycle can take you most places, but if you want to take your biking to the next level, specialized bicycles can make a huge difference.

Of course, not everyone needs specialized bicycles. Nowadays, there are too many parents willing to indulge the everywhere whim of their children. They buy them serious racing bikes to cruise around the neighborhood. If all your riding takes place within 10 miles of your home, buy a low-cost hybrid and have done with it. It will get you where you need to go. It will manage gentle off-road and street biking with equal ease, and will save you some money as an added bonus. Once you are doing 20 miles or more at a stretch, however, you should consider buying some specialized bicycle gear. You won't believe how much easier it will make your ride, allowing you to go farther, faster.
