Kids Furniture

I have always loved picking out kids room furniture with my daughter. It's not that furniture shopping is my idea of fun. I have always hated shopping of all kinds, and shopping for furniture is no exception. It is just that she gets so excited about kids furniture. I'm always so happy to see the pleasure in her eyes.

I guess I understand why children's furniture can be so exciting to young ones. It always seems to indicate a right of passage. When adults buy a piece of furniture, it is because they have been saving up and looking for a long time, and have found just the right item. Kids furniture, however, signifies something different. It is even more important to them than your new couch is to you. You see, new kids furniture usually means that the child is grown up a little bit. She will be too big for her chair, or too tall for that bed she has been sleeping in. When she gets new kids furniture, she knows she is one step closer to that magical world of adulthood.

I like to take this a step further in my family. When I get kids furniture for my daughter, I usually make it a reward. Secretly, I know that she is getting kids furniture because she is growing up, but she doesn't know that. I will set some goals for her. I will make her read a certain number of books, or do her chores every day for a month or two. Once this happens, she gets to pick out kids furniture for herself. I don't give her free run of the store. I tell her to pick out a new chair, or a new bed, or perhaps a kid table.

I think picking out kids furniture is one of my daughter's favorite things in the world. She is at that age where color is still fascinating. She sees the bedsheets with their bright vibrant colors, and her eyes practically water. She loves new rocking chairs best of all. She will sit in her kids rocking chair for hours, talking to her dolls and playing mommy. Children's furniture, you see, is part of her magical make-believe world. It helps her to imagine that she has her own house. Sometimes it is in a magic kingdom, but just as often it is a normal house like we have. The only difference is that she is the adult there.
