Monthly Household Budget 2

There are few of us so fortunate as to have no need of a monthly household budget. However, it is a fact that many people do not have one. Disdaining the boring monthly household budget can spell disaster to your finances! Do not let this happen to you! Let's take a look at how you can set up a simple, realistic monthly household budget that you will use. You will save money, without a doubt.

Oddly enough, the most common mistake people make when setting up their monthly household budget, is fudging. This is when, with an ardent desire to create a happy picture, the budget does not truly reflect all of your ordinary expenses. For example, the movie buff really spends about $60 per month on movies, but feels guilty. The result? The entertainment category gets an entry of $40, $20 short of reality. The smoker spends $100 per month on tobacco products. With sincerity of heart, he says, "I'll cut back." The entry? $80. You can see how this sort of fudging adds up to a monthly household budget that does not work. The cardinal rule? Be honest with yourself.

Armed with honesty, your first step is to list all of your ordinary expenses. This list should include your fixed expenses - rent or mortgage, utilities, cable or satellite services, your ISP and the like. Food costs can be hard to nail down, as many people buy impulsively. Your monthly household budget will soon have you spending an amount you can live with, although it may take a few months to get with your program. Gasoline costs may vary each month.

Next, list the non-essentials. Entertainment is sort of a catch-all and may include movies, dining out, theatre shows or bookstore visits. Be brutal and confess the reality to the honest monthly household budget. Is clothes shopping a hobby for you? Your hobby's cost may hide amongst an array of credit cards so that you do not really know what you spend. Collect your records and see what you spent last month. Use that figure for your entry on your new monthly household budget.

When your list is complete, make your spreadsheet with each category, either on paper or your PC. Each time you shop, clip your receipts for the day together. Make your entries daily. The sooner you know where things are going awry, the better. Once you have your monthly household budget under control, you can do this weekly.

If you have been honest with your initial budget, you should be pretty much on target at the end of the month. This is seldom the case, but it's not a disaster. If you shopped 'til you dropped and blew the budget, you simply deduct from your allowance for next month. Ouch! One thing is certain: you will know where your money goes and you will learn to live within your own constraints. Then you can open that savings account!
