Bar Signs Picking out the right bar signs can very easily make or break your pub. It might not seem that important, but the bar beer signs, marquees, and other displays are crucial. With a bar you see, ambiance is one of the most important factors. You have to know who your clientele is, and be able to cater to them. The same bar neon signs that might seem welcoming at a local dive will be off-putting at a high priced, exclusive club. It is all a matter of knowing your business, and your customers. If your choice in decorations doesn't seem designed to impress them and make them feel at home, they simply will not come. A lot of bartenders take it for granted that they should put up beer signs, but anyone who has studied bar design knows that this is not a foregone conclusion. Sometimes, even in a down to earth, homey sort of pub, an extra bar beer sign can really clutter up the front and make it look less appealing. I used to run a bar, for example, with an extremely sparse and simple bar sign in front. It said "Fifth Street Pub" in solid, red letters on the front, had blacked out windows, and nothing else. There was a solid oak door with flyers for bands that were playing there, but there were no other visible bar signs. The inside was likewise sparse, and there was nothing particularly remarkable about the place. Nonetheless, we did great business. The reason was that we were in a part of town that was usually reserved for upscale bars and pubs. People who wanted a more simple drinking experience would go with us instead. The lack of bar signs conveyed the impression that, unlike many of the pubs around there, we were a down-to-earth place. You didn't have to dress up to go to this bar, and as such they became quite a niche market for casual drinkers. Of course, in other areas, you need to use your bar signs to get attention. They can say some very practical things about your club. They can tell your customers, for example, what you have on tap, what kind of entertainment you provide, and who you're trying to attract. Sometimes, more is more! It is just as simple as that! The better you understand that you are selling image as well as drinks, the more effectively you will be able to decorate your bar to convey the right image. |
