Bumper Sticker
I know that it is pretty silly to try to express myself with my car. After all, people will at most make some broad observations that just can't compare to the complexity of a real person. Nevertheless, I am a sucker for bumper stickers. I love clever bumper sticker sayings. Whether they are political, cultural, or just plain out and out funny, I love bumper stickers, window decals, and other similar decorations for the car.
I think that self-expression is the biggest lure of the bumper sticker. Let's face it ñ you aren't going to convince them to change their minds just because of your bumper sticker. You may have all the pro Bush or anti Bush bumper stickers you want, and people are still going to look at your car and either immediately agree or disagree with you. Still, the self expression is important in and of itself.
You see, when you are in a car, all people see is a metal box. Maybe they peak in the windows and get a glimpse of you, but it's just not the same as when you are walking on the street. When you walk down the street, your clothes tell the folks you see about you. Whether you wear a T-shirt and jeans, some sort of a suit, a beautiful dress, or something else, people will make judgments about you based on it. There is sort of an interaction between you and them. You can make eye contact and figure each other out as you walk past. With a car, however, there is no similar interaction. All you see is another car driven by another driver. With enough different, creative bumpers stickers, however, you can really make people start to see through to the real you at the center.
Personally, I love custom bumper sticker printing. You can buy a lot of stickers that seem to express who you are, but the best thing to do is to make them for yourself. Although I now make a comfortable living selling bumper sticker decals and shirts on line, I started out just getting into it for my own personal use. I would order 50 stickers printed by an online printer, and start to distribute them out among my friends. People would like them so much that I finally can make a living doing it. All in all, it is quite a fine way to live!
