Owning a pet is a big responsibility and preparations should be made before the new family member arrives home. Caring for kittens involves some essential equipment but common sense is the most valuable commodity. There are some basic things to do to ensure your kitten is happy and healthy.
Your kitten will need a good cat carrier to bring it home and for later trips to the vet or relatives. It will also need shallow bowls for food and water and there should always be fresh water available. The bowls should be kept clean at all times. It's best to feed kitten with four or five small meals a day until kitten is six months old. After that, it can cope with two larger meals a day. Your vet will advise on the correct diet that kitten needs for nutrition.
For the sake of your furniture, it's a good idea to get a scratching post. Kitten will need a bed or a cardboard box with an entrance and lined with a blanket. Kittens need stimulation and will appreciate some non-toxic toys.
Caring for kittens entails registering with a vet, who will give the necessary vaccinations. Kitten must not be allowed out until the injections have been given and for a period immediately afterwards. The first vaccination is given at nine weeks and the second series at twelve weeks. The booster injection is given annually.
Another essential is a cat litter tray, tray liners and scoop. Caring for kittens is easier if you introduce your kitten into a routine straight away. Take kitten to the tray at the start of the day and at the end of the day and following meals. It will soon get used to it and using the tray will become second nature. Litter should be changed every day and the tray should be changed every week. If you do come across any cat feces, keep away from children and bury it.
Grooming is very important and it is something that kittens do instinctively for themselves. However, caring for kittens should involve the owner in helping with the process. This can help to minimize hairballs and it's also an opportunity to check for fleas, parasites and cuts etc. A brush and a wide spaced comb are the best tools for the job. There should be a regular examination of ears, eyes and teeth. Hygiene helps to keep the fleas away with vacuuming and washing the kitten's bedding
